A little amen to someone on my flist
My flist friend [info]lilapaddy (who writes very impassioned and well-thought-out metas) has posted a sad commentary on online fandom. To her (and to anyone else in similar straits), I can only recommend my more recent adaptive behavior strategy -- if a fandom comm/list starts looking dicey, get out of wherever you are ... if it starts looking like the whole fandom is overrun with jerks, well, time to gafe. Perhaps once all the good fen have vacated, the trolls/bullies/wacks will get bored and move on. A good example of this may be found over at svufiction (after most of the decent writers had been driven out by a handful of bullies, all that remained were the bullies sniffing and chortling about the "drama queens" ... e.g. victims who fight back, victims who don't fight back, victims ... I add this to make the point to certain trolls ;) ).

Till then, I serve as [info]lilapaddy's amen corner.

I understand, believe me.

Some of the viciousness of online fandoms leave me speechless, and yes, I've left several due to that sort of behavior. I nearly left this one a few months ago - it's a long, ugly, messy thing I don't want to get into given it was self-inflicted (well-meaning, but self-inflicted all the same), but the backlash was horribly ugly. Took me forever to get the courage to post again.

I will say this fandom doesn't have the amount of cliques that I'm used to running into. I will also say I've met some wonderful folks, far more good than bad.

But, if things go ugly as they have in the past, well...

Part of it is one of the major H/W bullies (she's not even a slash fan ... she just masquerades as one in order to attack slashers covertly) is one of my worst ones from the past. That fed my decision to vamoose. I'm astounded by sociopathy in all instances but the internet is SO vulnerable to it, I'm afraid that (unless one has a highly moderated forum), the trolls/bullies will invariably take it over.

I doubt your situation was self-inflicted -- psychopaths are expert at making people feel that way.
